Welcome to the New Huntmasters, NRBTX. Glad to have you on board.

Well, I always like to probe, a little. You already have a nice brace of sporting arms, and I assume that you just have the itch to acquire something that is not off the shelf, a little more personal.

There is a lot more to the exercise than deciding on the caliber. In fact, once you know what you want to accomplish with the gun, now you get into barrel contour, and length, stock design, what sort of glass you want to mount, and, of course, what action is going to serve as a platform. In short: CONCEPT.

Looks like you want a utility rifle, big game to predators; a walking around gun? And, you want something different? Are you considering exotic chamberings? Are you interested in hot rock performance? Do you like working with cases and components? In short, are you interested in wildcats, Improved designs, or more conventional cartridges?

Without knowing the answers, I'd guess that you need (or would be best served by) something in 24 or 25 caliber, which you already have. Understanding that bullet selection can go a lot towards changing your application, in .244" you have from 55 to 105 grain bullets, which should (most likely) cover your needs.

They have been around a long time, but there is a nice little family of cartridges: 6MM Remington, 257 Roberts and 7X57. On the other hand, in a short action, a 250Ackley Improved or a 6-250 Ackley are both efficient designs, and shoot factory ammo in a pinch.

There are a lot of exciting choices out there.

Good hunting. LB

Welcome to Huntmasters, little brother. Hope these guys can give you more insight than I did. I still say 270, 308, or 7mm-08 for an all around truck gun. I guess being a born and bred hillbilly from the show-me state someone will have to show you what to get. Perhaps my lovely sister-in-law could help you make up your mind.....hahaLOL LOL, I can just hear her now. Hey, guys I was born in NM and live in MO. He was born in MO and now lives out west. What were our parents thinking? Be nice to him, but not too nice. Dont make me pick on him all alone.

For Higgin's benefit: above, I am asking two questions.

Below, I offered a suggestion for either answer.

and, no, I doubt that the man would be able to find factory loaded cartridges for a 6-250Ackley. (but, you already knew that, didn't you? [Wink]

Good hunting. LB

I didn't know of a 6mm factory offering on the 250 case, but there have been a number of new cartridges introduced recently and that may have been one. I honestly didn't know, which is why I asked. [Smile]

Well it looks like you covered on the .22,.243 and .25. I wonder if it would be worth looking into something in the 6.5? Maybe 6.5-06, 6.5-284, 260 AI ?

Dennis
