What kind of a weenie is afraid of a little wind and a few drops of water falling from the Sky?
We just got home from Puerto Penasco, Mexico. We spend the last week at the Mayan Palace, About 20 miles south of town. One of the most beautiful resorts that I have ever been to.
We got in on Friday night and Spent most of Saturday out playing on the beach. Joyce and I took a nice swim on Saturday afternoon, having the greatest time together, until I came up though the surf with one of these stuck to the left side of my face.
That'd be a little jellyfish. ( I've other more descriptive words for it, but even Leonard won't let them use them in public. ) The first thing I thought, was that I had Sea Weed on me, so I wiped it off with my hand. Good Move, that thing like to drove me nuts itching and burning for the next hour. ( I love Benedril )
Things went quiet on Sunday. Monday was nice, we drove around and made arrangements to go fishing on Tuesday, take a Sunset cruise on Wednesday and Snorkeling with the Sea Lions on Thursday.
After making all of those plans, we went back to the resort for a Seafood Buffet. Wonderful food, except I accidentally swallowed a small piece of a crab shell in my soup.. Those things don't have much taste, but they do leave a lasting impact. Every five to thirty minutes, that thing would shift positions in my digestive tract. Causing anything from a mild flaming pain, to cramps so bad it doubled me over.
It made sleeping and active exercise nearly impossible. Both seemed to cause cramp after cramp. When that thing finally passed it was 11:45 pm On Thursday night, I was on my way back to the resort from the Hospital ( Hang on, I'll get to that part in a minute ) The feeling hit me fast and I'm glad I wasn't in a highly public place. I was a sweating, screaming, shaking mess as I passed that thing in the middle ( Literally ) of a Mexican Highway. It not only came out sideways, but I swear it was pushed by 4 jalapeņos and a couple of habaneras. I literally hung on my car door in tears for several minutes before gaining the muster to pull up my pants and go home.
Remember that little Wind Storm that Gerald mentioned? Well it hit us on Tuesday morning. Our day to go Deep sea fishing. The first time for my boys, wife and I. We had wanted the 4 hour trip, but that boat broke down, and we were told that it was the six hour trip or nothing. The swells were running a good 8' or more above and below the normal sea level. 7 of the 12 people on board puked before getting back. Neither my son, Craig or I actually got Sea Sick, but that boat literally rocked up to sleep. After three hours, it was impossible to keep my eyes open. That crabshell was still making it's way though my digestive system, and just as we headed for port, I felt a bad case of the runs coming on. But when I opened the bathroom door and that odor hit my nose, I blew my cookies just as hard as everyone else.
We still managed to have a great time and caught a butt load of fish! ( Fish fry Saturday at 4 here at my place )
Wednesday was a remarkably calm day. Joyce and I, my boys and my Parents all enjoyed a relaxing day around the pool and beach, then headed off for a perfect sunset cruise. Not only was it a spectacular sunset, but the full moon rose not 20 minutes later, a perfect ending for a memorable night.
Thursday morning was going to be our last Big Event of the week. If I'd only known how big, I'd have never let Joyce out of bed.
Joyce loves for the family to do swimming type of things. The boys and I are at perfect ease in the water. My parents are experienced SCUBA and Snorkelers. My wife Joyce how ever, can't swim a lick and tends to panic in the water if she can't touch bottom. She really believed that we would snorkel in 4' of water. It wasn't until the boat was under way and she asked the guide, that it finally sank in as to what we were going to do.
No problem, we strapped her in a life jacket and all was well. The boys or I would simply give her a push or pull in the direction we wanted her to go and just let her drift.
All went well until the second stop. We were seeing plenty of these.
They were all around us, and below us. ( The under water camera still uses film so you will have to wait for those pictures.
I was swimming next to Joyce, with Craig on one side, and Dean on the other, the Sea Lions were swimming all around us and we were having the times of our lives. Then I decided to go back to the boat and take some pictures of Joyce and the Boys. That's a mistake I'll never forget. I should have made sure to tell the boys to keep pulling their Mother back from the shore.
I swam back to the boat and while I was waiting for another lady to get off of the ladder, Joyce started screaming. It seems she had drifted in too close to the rookery on shore and pissed off one of these big guys.
Craig said later the bull had made a couple of charges under water, but with the life jacket on, her head was above water and she never saw him. The bull either got pissed, or decided she had the best legs in the sea, as he came back once more, this time biting her upper leg. He bit down hard enough that one of his two inch canines made a four inch wound.
I swam back to her and brought her to the boat, we started first aid, and loaded everyone up and made a bee line for shore, 12 miles out. I've got to hand it to that boats Captain, we came though those tidal flats at full bore and I never felt or heard the boat touch anything but water. When we got to shore, the truck and trailer was there waiting, we loaded on that trailer in record time, and the truck was pulling us down the road before he even got the power killed to the boats engines.
The Ambulance was waiting for us at the Office
And Joyce got a ride to the local Mexican Hospital.
After Surgery to repair torn muscle and puncture wounds, she's going to end up with some scars on those sexy legs.
The best advise I can give you before traveling to Mexico at this point is to replace your credit cards just before going. I only use my card for buying on the net. The magnetic strip is long gone. Mexican hospitals don't accept insurance cards, but they do take Visa and MasterCard, and a patient can't leave until the bill is paid.
Which brings me to why I was speeding down a Mexican Highway at nearly midnight when a clam shell decided to rip me a new sphincter.
Believe it or not, the Wife and I both agree, that was one of the best vacations that we've ever had!

Wow! Please convey our sympathy to Miss Joyce. What a trooper, best vacation, eh?
I'll tell you. Never been real comfortable with sea lions in the water, but they are good for one thing; early warning of shark.
How much did that needlework set you back? I got an ear infection while diving in Mexico, once. The Doctor was a very atractive lady, gave me some antihistamine, which helped a lot; didn't charge me anything.
Great read, Tim. Almost felt like I was there, except for the roadside festivities.

Tim,
That sounds like a whole lot of bad to happen at one time so to speak. Hope your wife's leg will be okay, and your...got everything out alright.
It's good to hear you caught lots of fish and enjoyed the sunset.

Sounds like quite the vacation. Stuff like that makes for some lasting memories down the road.
I hope your wife is okay and makes a complete recovery. Kinda scarey when you think abut how bad it could have been...

I'll bet another dollar'he will be checking for crab shells in his soup!..Tim,i about laughed myself right off my seat.There are the bad experience parts to you're story,but you made the story so damn funny the way you told it.LOL..That would be a good one for Outdoor Life section-[This happened to me]-Glad to hear you're wife pulled through that ordeal,it possibly could have been worse.

Wow Tim, after reading that I could not bring myself to complain about the discomforts of our trip to Puerto Varrarta. Poor airconditioning and bland food are nothing compared to what you experienced. I feel real bad for your wife.
We did have to suggest a new name though for the 60 foot Catamaran that hauled about 40 people out for snorkling on Thursday. We affectionately call it the USS Hurl now. It is amazing to me how the Ocean motion can reduce the most chick and stud of vacationers to the most pale, vacuous looking and humbled people in the world. Our 3 star hotel was also overrated by two stars. Glad you are back OK and the attitude is intact.
I had another friend spend almost her whole vacation in Cancun without power, hot water or decent food. Emily reeked havoc pretty bad for a bunch of people. We at least got our hotel money refunded and vouchers for our flights, so we could reschedule to the other coast on short notice.

I'm off for 5 days of boating to Cozemel in 3 weeks. Sure hope the curse is over by then.

Thank God I beat the curse -- was in Cozumel sport fishing in January. Caught no sea lions or jellyfish.
Fun but uneventful trip. Would have been tough to top your woeful tale even if it had been.
Hope your wife feels much better soon.

The best place I have seen in Mexico is Huatulco. Way down south but has a direct flight from somewhere in Texas.

Joyce is up and feeling much better now. She's even starting to move around on her own when my back is turned ![[Eek!]](eek.gif)
She wanted me to thank you all for her calls, e-cards and warm wishes.
I took her in yesterday to have her drain removed from her leg, and she was very glad to hear from an English speaking Dr. who said the Doctors in Mexico did a great job of stitching her up and gave her a great choice of medications.
She was already thinking about when we could return, before we even left, and she says she will go snorkeling with me again. Just not with the Sea Lions during their mating season. ![[Confused]](confused.gif)

We got in last night, of course I had to pull up the board to see whats new. Tim.....Im speechless over your story, had to call Dorothee in to read over my shoulder, she is like Joyce, if the water comes past the bellybutton, it's to deep. What a harrowing ordeal for her, thats a lot of animal to maul you over while being a human bobber.
I just read somewhere about the increased occurence of attacks by sea lions. First the damned porpoise turn on us, along with sharks, and now sea lions. Rule of thumb is, don't commune with the animals. Shoot them, eat them or just look from afar:)
Give Joyce our regards,can't wait to catch her in the merchantile and get the real story. Im sure she will agree, if you weren't boatside, and were with her, where you belonged....your damned long legs could have deterred her unfortunate attack!

I wish I'd of read this sooner. I'm so sorry to hear about your chick. Please give her yet one more chunk of regards from the Gevara family. We all hope she gets to feeling better quickly. Again WOW!!! You guys really keep your heads held high. Wonderful attitudes all you guys! I suspect you were both lucky that neither was worse. I know a guy that darn near died in the hospital because of a chicken bone he swallowed! (I'm thinking maybe you guys weren't at all lucky) But because of your wonderful attitudes, it will be a pleasant and very memorable vacation indeed!!! ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

Tim, what a set of trials and tribulations for a vacation. I have encountered those dang jellyfish... the locals say the best relief is to have someone pee on it... I think benadryl and other products are easier to utilize...
Sorry to hear about Ms Joyce's adventures... it sounds that she takes to water similar to my wife... gets out there and doesn't move and ends up with the water taking her where she didn't want to go...
It does look as if the Dr's did a great job of putting in a zipper... but she did put a hurting on those attractive limbs...
The image of the shell reminded me of a kidney stone, wish I hope never happens to anyone. The only thing different is the lack of the Chile's.

Tim, Charlene wanted to go to Mexico fishing with me. The picture of Joyces leg and the jellyfish ended that fishing trip, Oh well.....You two have a great sense of humor after what you went through. Good luck, God bless, be seeing you come Nov.
