How many coyotes are in your State? (your best guess)
What State has the most coyotes, in your opinion? (is there a good way to count them?)
Good hunting. LB
edit: bonus question: who has the biggest coyotes? [ August 17, 2005, 11:47 AM: Message edited by: Leonard ]

Largest "official" coyote was shot in Glover. Vt. a couple of years ago. 72lbs. according to K. Royar of the Vt. Dept of Fish and Wildlife.
Tom Bechdal reportedly killed an 84 lb. coyote with his vehicle in Ohio. Sheri has current info on that matter.

Rich forgot to point out that 145,000 of those AZ coyotes live in Maricopa County.

That is true. They used to live around the McNeal area until word spread that Tim moved there. They emigrated to Maricopa where they are safe.

I've hunted quite a few western states, and it can be spotty, so it's hard to generalize.
Texas is big, and I have not hunted most of it, just west Texas, so I don't know?
The states I hunt most are Arizona (spotty) New Mexico (western is better) Nevada (real steady) and California (we have a lot of coyotes)
Based on reputation (only) I say you cannot discount Texas, but California probably has as many and it's not that much smaller.
Big coyotes? They probably get a little bigger further east, and I have never been there?
Northern Nevada coyotes are good size, about the same as California, eastern Sierra, bigger than Arizona, on average.
Good hunting. LB

As far as big states, we could have a lot more coyotes than we do. There's plenty of room on this end. Western North Dakota has way more.
I've never noticed much of a difference in size from anywhere els. It seems to me that 22-25 is a close average. My biggest was 35lbs. It is suprising how much they don't weigh when prime. Fur can be decieving.
It's tough to say who has the most. I often wonder who has the most accessable coyotes, and what state has the mose coyote callers.

Seen, 26 or so the last 12 months. Don't know how many are in state. Doesn't concern me.
I'd vote East coast for the largest canines, [in general].

Ohio does there population studys off of bowhunter serveys so they have no idea of how many coyotes we have.
Im going to say that we have some of the largest coyotes around, we get several every year in the 50# class every year. Last year I had 3 over 50#'s. some of the norhtern states get good size coyote as well, VT, NH, Ky, PA. But Ohio has some nice coyotes as far as size goes. My adverage has been around 30-35 pounds in the last couple years.
Im going to say TX has the most coyotes.
And AZ has the most coyote hunters.

I would say Texas has the most. That can be deceptive though without quailification. Texas also has the most land mass. Coyote populations in Texas can be very spotty from region to region. South Texas has great number as well as most of West Texas. The panhandle region is a close third followed by central Texas. East Texas has the least, but make up for lower numbers with size. Duz size matter ?
I would say the North Eastern states hav the largest. They are lots smarter and live to be old and fat .
Brent we kill coyotes here ever year that bump the 50# mark as well. 6 hours west of here they do good to bump 35#'s. Go to South Texas and the do good to get to 30#'s.
Killed two yesterday that were smaller than average. The appeard to be 2-3 years (Teeth) but would do good to weigh 22-25 pounds. Both were females and both were dry, incase you were wondering.

At one time I had a USDA or Aphis chart bookmarked that showed estimated populations for all the states. Can't seem to find it, I'll keep looking.
Just making a wild quess, I'd say there are about 50,000 to 60,000 in my state. That's just considering potential home range and litter size. Probably averages 1 per square mile with some pockets of 5 or 6 per square mile(before the mange gets them).

There are 3 left in Wyoming. I'll probably get to them next week.
The rest are all in Texas. Go there.

I don't know how many coyotes are in New Hampshire. Enough to keep he thinking I can call one in everytime I go out though.
I do know, from the Wildlife Harvest Summary that they are trapping more than twice the number of coyotes here than they were just 10 years ago.
Also, while trapper numbers declined, the number of trapped coyotes was up over 30% from last year. So I think the population is growing too.
I have no clue who has the most coyotes. The biggest seem to come from the northern states though.

The problem with the 145,000 coyotes in Maricopa County is that Rich has called everone at least once. So they all have been educated. Thanks Rich!
