I am reading this really great book on Anasazis and how the original sites were found by a cowboy and his brothers, then later a bunch of archaeologists.
Just curious, do you have an interest in Anasazis or is your interest limited to the hunch backed flute player?

Sounds like a pretty good book. Keep reading until you get to the fertility god part!!!
My intrest is in all things South West and the fact that many other cultures have a similar deity. Pan of the Greeks & Loki of the Norse for example.

My uncle's canyon is 6 miles from the backside of Mesa Verde near Cortez, CO. If you stand on the top rim, you can see the backside of it. His canyon has ruins from a culture that's supposed to be an estimated 700 years older than the Anasazi, but the property adjacent to his has more Anasazi ruins comparable to Mesa Verde, but not nearly as big and extensive. I guess those people won't let anyone onto that property and choose to protect them themselves. Eddie's family has chosen to no longer allow any type of artifacts to be removed from their place, i.e., pottery, arrowheads, etc..

Man, that sounds cool Lance. Cortez is spectacular! I've hunted turkey in Delores CO. That too is super beautiful. How close were the fires to your cousin 2 years ago? 700 years older? Are those the ones known as the basket makers? Maybe the basket makers are the Anasazi. Not sure.
Check out anasazis.com for tons of really awesome pictures of rock art down in the 4 corners area, mostly in Utah.
Really interesting stuff Koko'! I'll get you the name of that book. [ June 01, 2006, 07:47 PM: Message edited by: Locohead ]

The fires that burned across the Mesa were reported by my uncle. Hewis reitired as a supervisor for Empire Electric and frequently goes out to safety monitor linemen crews. On that particular day, he was out with a group and one of the guys up on a pole working on a transformer said he saw lightning hit a dead snag about a mile away. Moments later, there was smoke visible. My uncle called it in and he said it was tragic to see the fire get onto the Park Service ground where the fire units had to stop for fear of damaging artifacts.
