Author Topic: Turkey Season Andy L HI, I'M THE NEW MODERATOR OF THE CENTRAL MISSOURI FORUM, PULL MY FINGER! Member # 642 posted October 01, 2006 08:00 AM                   Turkey season opened here today. I took Austin, my 12yr old son, out this morning. I talked to a bunch of turkeys for an hour and a half. Those stupid birds would not cross a creek and fence. As usual. Finally, one flew across and landed 25 yrds in front. Austin killed it almost as soon as it hit the ground. Damned if another didnt fly in and land right beside the flopping bird and he got it too!! The boy tagged both his birds right off the bat. Im a proud daddy, no doubt. You know, I live for that look on his face, that big smile, those smiles, ect.... that I get each time he kills a deer or turkey or coyote. It kinda hit me this morning. Hes 12. Lookin more like a man each day. This wont last much longer. Better enjoy it. His little brother will be 7 next year. I started Austin at 7, so hes next. There were 14 hens/young birds and 5 big gobblers in this group Ive been watching. Way to go man! My boys had their first major kill this last weekend. Jacob 8 and Joshua 6 put about one hundred and ninety-seven BB's into a poor prairie rattler's head that crossed our path while dove hunting. Oh yeah, Andy. Member # 642 posted October 02, 2006 06:29 PM                   Hey Brent, thanks!! Brent, I understand your the man I should ask this. I am a self taught turkey hunter. I never had anyone to show me anything, zilch. My dad isnt a hunter so that was no help. I was lucky enough to grow up in a place that is lousy with birds, which really helps. We had railroad tracks that ran thu our farm I grew up on. It had approx 5 miles of woods on each side, with some small fields. I could, and still can, go walk those tracks during spring season and hear 12-20+ birds on any given morning. That helped alot. Screw one up and go after another. I had many failed attempts as a kid and finally, when I was 12, I finally got it together and called and killed my first bird. Ever since it has been smooth sailing. Anyway, with the risk of sounding stupid, whats a kee kee run? Ive always heard people talk about that, but never knew what it was? I learned by listening to turkeys on what works and what doesnt. In the fall, a fast cackle with a series of real loud raspy yelps seems to always work for me. Is that a kee kee? Like yesterday, these birds were very vocal. And, I was trying to be as vocal if not more. It worked. The whole flock was trying to come, but the dumb things didnt want to cross a fence and creek til these two youngins above finally did it. Just curious if that sound I hear in the fall and use alot in the fall is what everyone talks about. Thanks for posting the pics properly, that was cool of you. Anytime I see a kid in the hunting sport it hits a warm spot with me! They will be the ones that carrie on with this sport when we are gone! You did well!!! There are two terms for the kee kee. One is the kee kee run and one is just a kee kee. Its a lost call for the young polts or young of the year birds. They learn this call when they are polts to keep track of each other and there mother. The kee kee is just a high pitched wisel and seems to run in a series of three notes togeather or just two notes. Sort of sounds just like you spell it....KEEEEEEE, KEEEEEE, KEEEEEEE or Kee, kee, keeeeeee, keeeee, keeeeeee A kee kee run will end with a young yelp at the end. And be short and raspy. Like.....Keeeeeee, keeeee, keeeeeeee, yelp, yelp. They learn this at a young age, and the young flock keeps track of each other this way. And when or if they get lost or stray away from the flock, or get busted up, they will go this as a lost cal. Then in return the old hen will do a assembly yelp, to guide the flock back togeather. She will yelp, most of the time in series, of 8-20 or more raspy old hen yelps to let all the other polts know were the flock is and bring them all back togeather as a group. In the fall if I guide for turkeys or get a chance to hunt, I will bust the flock up, and scatter them. Then I will set up in the same area, wait 10 min or so and run lost calls, or keekee calls, and assembly yelps and try to pull the members of the flock to my set up for a shot. Works very well. And adds a little fun to the fall hunts. I have also called spring gobblers with the kee kee calls as well. Its not my prefured call in the spring but as a last effort, and it works then Im all for it. My guess in the spring is that it makes the gobbler think there is a young turkey or Jake in his area. Jake yelps and gobbler yelps will work will in the fall as well. And at times work well in the spring in areas were the season commes in early. I will cutt some in the fall as well. Alot of the time when a hen gets all pissed off she will start cutting and yelping. This is just there way of expressing there anger or erge for something or expressing they are excited about something. It will draw birds in the spring and fall as well, and kind of sounds like what you may have been going to get the birds to come. LOL BTW, Ive heard of people busting turkeys on purpose in the fall and calling them back. Ive done it but not on purpose. If I get close enough to bust them good, Im killin turkeys.... I am up for talking Turkeys or hunting anytime! Talking about busting flocks up....I few years ago I got to hunt with a guy that had a trained dog to bust up the flocks. Now that was fun! Those dogs tracked down the flock then barked and busted up the flock. The dog would come back, and he had a camo bag the dog would slide into with its head sticking out and laid right beside were we were set up. And never move a inch! Then we would try and call the birds back togeather. I had a blast and would love to go again. For those that don`t know Austin, he`s the shootinist 12 yr. old I ever did meet, he`s pretty doggone good with a rifle too, last time I shot P.D.s with him he showed me up in a somewhat embarrassing manner for a 40 yr old.
