I don't think I have ever posted a hunting story on the site. So here goes. Stay tuned to the end, I plan to get it right the first time for TA 17.

As the Holidays approached, I had only made one stand. It was a last minute ordeal and nothing showed. One of my neighbors kids, stationed in Alaska, came in on leave for the holidays. He asked me to take him and of course I couldn't turn him down.

The first stand of the morning was dry. The second stand we had a slight south breeze, so set up facing North in a pecan orchard. I was using a Porath open reed and after about 5 minutes I see a coyote coming fron the west cutting down wind. I got Cory's attention and after I saw him get lined up on the coyote, I barked one time on the call. When the coyote stopped, there was a locust thron bush between them. when the coyote came out in a trot, it caught our scent and turned north to leave in a hurried pace. Two shots later and the coyote was still running, only faster than before.

Our next stand, I went to a canal and put our backs to it and had the wind in our face. About 3-4 minutes with the Porath caller and Cory motions that he is seeing movement out in the tall grass. The little female came in real sly. She used every bit of cover she could gain till there was no cover between us. One shot at about 100 yards from the Mini 14 and Cory sealed the deal.
 -

That was the end for that day as the weather began to turn nasty.

A few days later and he was back at my house wanting to go again. This time my son, Steven, wanted to go. Usually he carries the camera, but today he wanted to take the rifle. The first stand was again without action. On the second stand we had to cross a canal to enter the field I wanted to call on. Again the wind was coming from the south at a slow breeze. We set up to call to the East with a lot of open ground to our north to see anything wanting to cut down wind. I was sitting behind them on the other side of a big pecan tree. After about 3-4 minutes using distress on the Porath again, I see two dark images way out in the tall grass back to the west. I tell the boys that there are two coming in from behind them and they should be showing up in the field to the north. The coyotes just didnt seem to be in a hurry. They piddled around in the field and basically ignored my screaming. After a few minutes, they turned around and headed back west. I get the boys to come around to my side and while they were setting up to get ready, I pulled out the FX5. For the life of me I can not do a good pup distress. I turned the FX on and dialed up the pup distress. These coyotes were 700 or so yards across that field. As soon as the sound reached the coyotes, they turned on a dime and began a hard burn to us. I tell the boys to face north and the coyotes will come in from down wind. When the coyotes hit the canal I muted the caller. As they popped out on our side of the canal, they got a full snoot of our wind and turned for the trees. My son says "how far" I said "top of the back" and he fired. He hit the coyote through the neck at 207 steps on a dead run.
 -
Here they are going to get it.
 -
And of course the hero shot.
 -

Now I would like to give thanks to my dad for teaching me hunting skills, Porath for building my call, FP for putting out Cal's pup distress, my wife for letting me go hunting, Ruger and Bushmaster for making the rifles, Black hills for creating the ammo, Nat gear for the camo, hanes for the underwear I had on, the farmer for allowing me to hunt there, all the people I have ever heard talk about coyote hunting and gleaned wisdom from, and especially Leonard for putting up with my sorry butt while I puff my chest out and bragg on my boys getting to enjoy the challenge of the hunt. If I missed anyone, let me know and I will edit appropiately.

seems to be a habit around here. LOL

edited to add: I have turned quite a few coyotes with that sound. The first time I ever used it, I had just gotten my FX-3. I can not do vocals well and especially the pup distress. I had it set to play the pup distress for after I had taken a shot. I used a hand call to do some rabbit distress. A coyote came in and I took a standing frontal shot at about 75 yards. Just flat out missed. It turned for the woods in high gear. I fumbled around and got the remote and ran the volume up. This coyote did a U-turn and headed back at the caller like his butt was on fire. I had the caller set on a bull nettle and when it got to the caller, reared up and pounced on the caller in the middle of that bull nettle. The second shot was good as it stood there looking around like "What just happened".

There was a Porath at the campout, but I think it was Jeff Porath's father, Joe?

So, Randy, that Mini14 does the job, eh?

Good hunting. LB

Yeah Leonard. but that is not a stock Mini.

My FIL had the rifle and asked me to see if I could get a load that would group in under a foot. Rather than fight the thing, I sent it off to Carolina and had it accurized. It came back a true 1-1/5 shooter using BlackHills 60 V-Max. It will throw a piece of brass out of sight, so I don't load for it. He passed away about a year after I gave it back to him, accurized, as a Christmas present. The MIL gave it to me shortly thereafter. I like the rifle. It handles and points betterthan an AR. I don't get to use it much,I prefer a bolt gun. But from time to time, I pull it out just because.

Sorry LB, Foxpro bought the rights to the sounds that I had recorded, so now you have to deal with them. [Smile]

Good story Randy. Glad you could take out a member of our armed forces. Speaking of that I am sorry you are having so much trouble giving away your free Texas hunt. It is really sad that today’s youth don’t have the gumption to take out a veteran for dinners sometime and at least pretended to care about what he went through in the war. Seams like the younger generation wants everything handed to them with no strings attached.

You would probably have a ton of hits if you changed the rules a bit. Like maybe a short essay about why they deserved a free hunt. LOL Actually it probably has to do with GG more than anything. LOL Think about it Randy! You didn’t even want to hunt with him. LOL

Good hunting.

Yes Randy, that was a very generous offer. I know you don't give to get, but maybe GG will offer to take you on a hunt for free. You might have to pay for your own meals. Seems that was the policy in the past. LOL

Ragn did win the hunt Randy. He is now just trying to give it away to a noble youngster. No ne can be found. And you hit the nail on the head. Ya got to buy your own cheeseburgers if ya want to hunt with GG. LMAO Maybe Ragn should donate his own hunt to raise money? He could call it the GG cheeseburger fund. LOL

Good hunting.
