I set out at the beginning of this season to kill 40 coyotes locally. Well, this morning, in the span of about two hours, I managed to connect with39, 40 and 41. I just love to hit a goal like that.
First one came in as a pair on a shotgun-only piece of ground when both came vaulting out of a large shelterbelt and charged the caller from about 300 yards. The Ultimate One was 25 yards in front of me and number one, which I believe was the female of the pair, came to within about fifty yards and peeled off to the left. The male came right to the caller and I rolled him hard with a load of #4 BS 3-inch mag. He got up and ran, and I rolled him a second time at about 40 yards, jacked another shell in and took what was supposed to be a third shot, but I was empty. I began rolling and palming fresh rounds from my shoulder strap carrier into the action of the shotgun and managed to roll him twice more at about 55 and 70 yards, and even took a hail Mary at about 100 yards and dropped his ass. Yeah, even I was surprised. By then, though, he'd gone to staggering sideways and shortly thereafter, simply fell over and couldn't get up.
#40 was a gimme when I spotted him standing in the doorway of an old outbuilding about 225 yards off the side of the road we were walking along to get to where we wanted to call. I crawled through brush that was between us, dropped my pods and dusted him at about 240 as he tried to saunter off.
Having already met my goal for the year, I was ecstatic to call another pair out of the river bottoms about twenty minutes later. The female of the pair circled wide and tried to backdoor my gunner, Kevin. She spooked and I had to take a 250 yard shot running left to right and connected somewhere in the latter half of her. She got up and ran and I cleanly missed her X3. Kevin turned around, steadied off the side of a tree and made a helluva 400+ yard shot, hitting her in the ass end and prompting her to bleed out. We've had several cost us a handful of shells lately as they appear fast and run like hell resulting in long range hurry up shots, but few, if any, have managed to get away.
Here's a pic - the only one in existence - of the guy that replaced Matt as my gunner- Kevin. He's dead eye as hell with that .223.

He gave up on me and joined the Air Force this past year when layoffs started hitting closer to him. Spoke with him last night, as We talk every couple weeks, and he's very happy about his decision. Currently, he's stationed in sunny Little Rock, ArKansas at a C-130 Airwing Air Base doing logistics.

That's mine, Jeremy. Mossy 835 with the ATI Ar-style adjustable stock. His gun was already cased and put away when I told him we needed to get a pic. He, like me, shoots a Savage.
