sorry Tim, I just like to see the right equipment for time period etc. in a western. Remember the movie where Clint Eastwood painted a town red to scare the bad guys? I don't remember the name. Your saying that was a good movie?
The guy that I think has made a couple good westerns lately is Tom Selleck. He's had a couple out in the last few years that were made for tv and he really did his homework as far as saddles and guns representing the authentic for the time period, and were entertaining movies to boot.

Starting this thread I completely overlooked western movies. Specifically I was curious about old-time western television series i.e. Gunsmoke, Cheyenne, Bonanza, etc.
Giving this thread a kick in the leg to walk down a slightly different trail -- what was your favorite old-time western television series, and why?

As long as I'm asking for favorite old-time western television series, I thought finally giving mine might be appropriate?
Cheyenne and Bonanza are my favorites by far. The open country of the West were a huge draw as a kid. Guess I got them both ingrained in my blood because as an adult I still love 'em.
Just wish Cheyenne was on somewhere in re-runs or DVD.

Tim,
I'm guilty too. Try renting Open Range its a new release I think (a year or so old). It is a really nice Western with Robert Duvall, the handsome guy.....uh what's his name??? Oh Kevin Costner and Annette Benning I think. I really don't remember the movie real well but I liked it and my chick really loved it. And she hates Westerns!!!! There must me an element of "chick-flickedness" to it! Good Luck!!
Anyway,

Tripp,
In that case, Gunsmoke. If my memory serves me right, Monday nights at 7 on CBS. I was about eight at the time so I may be wrong. In any event, if you're surfing thru the channels and come across TV Land and it's on, I always know it. The cinematography was unique in some way and made it stand out from the rest. What has always perturbed me about it, though, is no place in Kansas looks like that, especially down around Dodge.

Common mistake. Just remember - cowboys don't marry their cousins, and most of them have more than one tooth. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

How about.....Shane and Spencers Mountian? Maybe they were average, but I liked them :)I almost forgot about Judge Roy Bean, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kidd? Hell, most older folks could name 100 great Westerns. [ April 17, 2005, 09:03 PM: Message edited by: onecoyote ]

My best old western was when I was growing up. In the 50's. I used to pact 2 colts in holsters embroidered on my tiny PJ's. I sported a Black 1 1/2 gallon hat, tilted, on my little noggin. Mom says I never, never left the place without my guns. Still don't. That's the best western I've ever seen.

Jack, you must be closer to my dad's age. he was always gabbing about some Gabby character... Gabby Hayes or something like that. Simpler, and better times.

Yeah, I used to keep my ear glued to a radio the size of a small refrigerator, listening to the Lone Ranger. I met the guy that did the voice, William Conrad, who played Cannon on TV, down at Marina del Ray, a couple times. My folks were in B Basin, just down a ways from him. Other notables along the same dock were Wink Martindale, Bobby Darin, Peter Fonda, and another old guy that played in Wagontrain, but I can't think of his name, at the moment? Last name started with a "C".
Anyway, a lot of people don't realize that the TV Lone Ranger (Clayton Moore?) was not the original actor, on the radio.
Good hunting. LB
edit: John McIntyre, not a C? [ April 18, 2005, 11:18 AM: Message edited by: Leonard ]
