I was talking to this guy on the phone up in Wyoming last week. He told me that in some areas he hunts, he won't touch a killed coyote because the Plague has killed a bunch of prairie dogs and coyotes. He even mentioned something about a Fish & Game guy being hospitalized because of it.
I'd never heard of such a thing.

Yup. In p-dogs, it's called sylvanic plague. Same fleas bite us, we get bubonic plague. I don't know how coyotes fit into the picture. No doubt those same fleas could hitch a ride on a coyote though. Two years ago, I know the plague was hitting the p-dogs in Thunder Basin pretty hard. The ranch I was shooting on, is on the north edge, and he was pretty excited that "the plague was coming". Called him last year, and he said he didn't have any prairie dogs left to speak of.
I know there have been several people in the last four or five years come down with plague from contact with p-dogs over closer to you Loco.
It definitely happens.

In 67 the Army gave us plague shots before going to Nam. I wonder if they are available for civilians?.

Plauge shots are available, talk to your doctor. Tell him that you often go into areas where the plague fleas are common and he can get you that shot.

We have plague down around Parker, once in a while, ground squirrels, but it's not a huge problem, as far as I know?
I didn't know there was a vaccine? The buzz, the past few years has been Hanta Virus. That's a serious problem in certain areas of the southwest, including right here in California.

Where I grew up the Utah prairie dog is highly endangered. A big NO-NO to shoot. The government would set live traps, and relocate the animals to a new area, they nearly wipped out the entire species by doing this. They were mixing the animals up from different colonies to diversify the species, but what they were doing was spreading the plague, some colonies could tolerate different strands more than others but when exposed to everything they had entire prairie dog towns dieing. So then 10 years later they decided not to relocate them, That little varmit starting taking over the entire town. The new post office building to be built down town was delayed for two years while they brought in earth quake machines to scare away a pair before construction. A furniture store paid the government $50,000 in mitigation for a 1 acre parcel. An entire industrial park sits in weeds waiting to be built. When something is built a biologist is required to monitor for any prairie dogs killed in the construction. When an animal is found its bagged and sent off for autopsy. Two years ago they nearly took over the city golf course, until some brave soul(s) put a fix to the problem. Come spring when the government did their count, not one prairie dog could be found on the course and that was the largest known colony. Soon the federal boys from Washington showed up, knocking on doors, accusing husbands, trying to get women to confess for husbands, starting spreading a bunch of stories and pointing fingers. Two weeks later the town folk had enough, 4:30 a.m. the S.W.A.T. team knocked on the feds door showed legal papers for herassment charges and asked them to pack their bags. It's too bad the plague didn't finish the job ten years ago.

Amen to that Barndog.
I feel real sorry for that guy they charged with killing some of those golf course dogs. It would be about like bringing someone in New York City up on federal charges for killing a stinking rat. Bunch of BULL CRAP.
