Now that this site is attracting the likes of top quality Sportsmen such as Gerald Stewart. I finally feel comfortable in asking this question, sure that I will get a quality answer.

Which spike is better to have on my shoes? Steel? or those plastic soft ones?

The local Golf course just became public, and they no longer allow my steel spikes. Should I find a new course, or buy the plastic ones?

More and more courses are banning steel spikes. In a few more years I doubt if you will find any courses that allow them.

Some don't even allow the plastic ones Tim.

And many of them don't allow jeans and T-shirts either. Shirts must have a collar and that doesn't mean Tritronics either.

I've played several courses that don't allow T-shirts. Never bothered me much as I don't often wear them. No one has ever mentioned me wearing jeans.

Do those soft spikes grip as well? Do they use the same sized stud, or am I going to have to buy new shoes as well?

It's nice to get current on these developments.

Thanks. Had I not given up golf years ago, I might have been arrested, showing up in my spikes...or did I toss them, I don't remember?

Do we need a golf forum, or what?

Good hunting. LB

edit: but it's nice to know somebody besides Bill O'Reilly is looking out for us. I didn't realize those spikes were such a threat? This is right up there with the plastic knives on airplanes; I'll sleep easier knowing the spike police are doing their job!

(not to mention stamping out Tee shirts)

Sorry Leonard I got carried away and forgot it is you're board. I guess you can even say bowling if you won't to. I cant help but think how much good Coyote cover it takes to build a stinking GOLF course.

Sorry

Leonard,
I am not a golfer, but I think the plastic spikes are to prevent transmission of grass diseases from one green to the next.

I couldn't agree more, Ronnie. We are in need of a seven step program. It's sad, you do everything possible, and then this is the way they pay us back. [Frown] Where did we go wrong?

Good hunting. LB

edit: thanks for the info, Randy. What, plastic kills disease?

Ronnie,

The wife doesn't allow me to chase fat chicks around the local Honky tonks any more. So when It's too hot or too windy to go calling, I play golf. Sunday, the wind wouldn't let up, so I took the boys to the local course.

No expert here. But have been told the fungi/disease does not attach itself as easily to plastic as it does steel. Thus less likely to be spread to the next green.

Just violated one of my own self- imposed rules. I made a post based on someone elses opinion instead of my own personal experience. At least it did not pertain to calling.

The main reason for outlawing all spikes is to limit damage to the greens, mostly compaction but also some people drag their feet. The replacement looks sort of like a round rubber pad and they will fit your old shoes.

No, I don't play golf, but have built quite a few golf courses.
Also leased a golf course for 10 years.

Play pool at the local tavern instead. I don't know why any grown man would want to hit his balls around a perfectly groomed gun range !
