Is anyone here good at math?

I have a cylinder shaped fuel tank, Square on both ends. It is 45.5" in diameter, and 40.5" long ( Outside dimensions ) How many gallons will it hold?

I was told when I bought it that it held 250 gallons, and in 6 years, no one has filled it to 250 gallons. Even when brand new and empty.

Today they filled it with 262 gallons, and I already had an estimated 30-40 gallons in it.

Before I file a complaint, I want to confirm that it actually is a 250 gallon tank.

"It is 45.5" in diameter, and 40.5" long"

45.5/12 = 3.79

40.5/12= 3.375

R = 3.79/2 = 1.89

piR2 = 11.22 ft2 X 3.375ft =

37.87ft3

7.48 gal/ft3 = 283 gal

The tank holds 283 gallons based upon exterior measurements. With the thickness of the steel it holds a little less. I bet they used up the air space. Also look and see if the overflow tube overflowed. That was the bane of my existence, dam stupid heating oil truck drivers overfilling tanks and it running into the storm sewer and then down to the river.

The overflow tube might be sticking down a couple more inches. Meaning that although the dimensions may compute to 283, you could never get that much in it because the stuff will come out the overflow, set at the 250 gallon level. Is this tank on it's side, or upright? The most likely cause, if you ask me is the guy didn't reset his counter? Or, the flowmeter is inaccurate?

Good hunting. LB

You old farts are living in the stone age:) We utilize propane out west here, not fuel oil.

tim, 3.14 *22.27*22.75*40.5*40.5/231=284.89 gallons.If a cylinder. Here fuelers often will not fill tank completely full to allow for expansion,most will leave it down 10 to 15%.

Most propane tanks have curved or rounded ends?
