SCHOOL DAYS
1970 vs. 2007
Scenario: Jack goes quail hunting before school, pulls into school parking
lot with shotgun in gun rack.
1970 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack ' s shotgun, goes to his car
and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
2007 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and
never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized
students and teachers.

Scenario: Johnny and Mark get into a fistfight after school.
1970 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up best
friends. Nobody goes to jail, nobody arrested, nobody expelled.
2007 - Police called, SWAT team arrives, arrests Johnny and Mark. Charge
them with assault, both expelled even though Johnny started it.

Scenario: Jeffrey won ' t be still in class, disrupts other students.
1970 - Jeffrey sent to office and given a good paddling by the Principal
Returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2007 - Jeffrey given huge doses of Ritalin; Becomes a zombie; Tested for
ADD; the School gets extra money from state because Jeffrey has a
disability.

Scenario: Billy breaks a window in his neighbor ' s car and his Dad gives
him a whipping with his belt.
1970 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college,
and becomes a successful businessman.
2007 - Billy ' s Dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy removed to foster
care and joins a gang. State psychologist tells Billy ' s sister that she
remembers being abused herself and their Dad goes to prison. Billy ' s mom
has affair with psychologist.

Scenario: Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.
1970 - Mark shares aspirin with Principal out on the smoking dock.
2007 - Police called, Mark expelled from school for drug violations. Car
searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario: Pedro fails high school English.
1970 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English, and goes to college.
2007 - Pedro ' s cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear
nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation
is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against state school system and
Pedro ' s English teacher. English banned from core curriculum. Pedro is
given his diploma anyway, but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he
cannot speak English.

Scenario: Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from 4th of July, puts
them in a model airplane paint bottle, and blows up a red ant bed.
1970 - Ants die.
2007 - BATF, Homeland Security, FBI called. Johnny charged with domestic
terrorism, FBI investigates parents, siblings removed from home, computers
confiscated, Johnny ' s Dad goes on a terror watch list; not allowed to fly
again.

Scenario: Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He
is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.
1970 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
2007 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She
faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of psycho-therapy.

That first part really hits home. There wasnt a day that I didnt have a gun in my truck at school of some sort. Whether it was for squirrels and cats (cat hides brought $2) after school or deer hunting before and after.
Times arent gettin better....

In high school I actualy took a mossburg shotgun to school to do a speech on how to take apart, clean and reassemble the weapon. A few years later a guy I knew tried the same thing with a muzzleloader and the police were called.

1962 we bought British Enfields for $12.00 from the back page of Outdoor Life. Took them to wood working class and sporterised the stocks, and got a grade for it.
What on earth has changed guns over all these years?. How did they become evil, all on there own?.

Graduated high school in '84. The principle became concerned about theft, so requested that no firearms be left in vehicles on school grounds. We were asked to bring them to the office before school, and could pick them up when school was out. Seeing someone walk down the hall carrying a rifle before school was not uncommon. Now, my kids say they can't even make a pistol with their fingers without getting into trouble. Maintain, Geordie

We brought guns to school all the time, mainly to trade or borrow, in the parking lot. No handguns, that I ever recall, just shotguns and 22 rimfires. Those were simpler days and it's too bad that they are long gone. What happened? Not just the hysteria about guns, but locking the front door before going to bed, or leaving the keys in the ignition. I never knew anybody who owned a safe of any kind, until I was middle aged.
I tell you what. Most people would like to live forever, but I do not envy the kids of today, I'm glad I won't be around to see how this all turns out. It won't be pretty.

We did the parking lot routine, as well. Guns and ducks were the most common, though me and one buddy had kind of an informal competition during trapping season for bragging rights. I remember the year I caught 14 coyotes and he caught, uh, none.
Loaded 7mm Mauser rounds for my history teacher, shot my first AR with the HVAC teacher one day. Tied flies and built a superb Herters flyrod in some shop class. Had a school sponsored field trip for us to all test them out.
My whole class took a hunter safety coarse on school time. Male and female alike, shooter or non. You or your parents were not asked. The community thought it important everyone have rudimentary firearms handling training. Sounds kinda cutting edge for a bunch of Mo. hillbillies, but as I recall it was in direct response to the game warden's son accidentally killing his younger brother with a .357.
Different times, for sure. They're really teaching kids strange stuff these days. They even tried to teach my son that Bill Clinton was a great man.... hah!

I came from a small school(5 townships and still class D)we also had hunters ed(mandatory)and ecology class where I conducted a tour of bounty and fur traplines;even had overnight campouts.
The only gun regulation we had was during the day all longarms had to be in the principals office and you couldnt shoot on school property.
We too had a smoking dock;loaning a smoke to a teacher kinda changed the relationship.

I come from a real small town, had 14 kids in my senior class and 42 kids freshman - senior, and for our senior play we did a western and we used real firearms in the play.
I doubt that there was a day that at least one vehicle parked at school had at least one firearm in it.
When I was a teenager, one of my brothers and I walked and hunted all the way from the farm into grandma's house in town. About 6 miles, but we walked right down the sidewalk through town with our guns over our shoulders and hardly got noticed.
You might still be able to do that there, since they don't even have a city cop any more. Only a county sheriff that rolls through on occasion.

I once did a trapping demo for one of my speech classes. I can not remember a day that I did not have a gun in my truck at school. The day following Christmas break all the male teachers and students would meet in the parking lot to show off the guns we had gotten for Christmas. My high school principal once pulled me out of class so he coule borrow my pocket knife. I rode a horse to school one day and one of the other kids held open the door so I could ride him down the hall. Now, allmost 30 years late my nephew goes to that samll rural school. He carries a gun in his truck and still will wear camo to class if deer season is open. Only difference is where we had guns displayed in the back window racks, the school has a don't show don't tell policy. If he keeps if from site they are OK with it.
