I'm not much of a web crawler so it can be said that I really don't get out much. So, while looking for a wider web experience I dropped in at the 24hourcampfire board. Generally my experience there has been pleasant enough, but today I got into what looked like an average conversation on after market triggers for Ruger #1 and #3 rifles. Suddenly I'm in the middle of a fight with this one poster and he's simply out of control, almost a typical troll, with the exception that he's honest enough and has a passion for his thesis, but my god he's horrible. People like that will ruin a perfectly good board. My question is, does anyone here know if that website is moderated and if it is how are people like this controled?

I have only looked at that board once or twice and not lately? I'd say they need a moderator? Maybe the guy knows you came from a place where he was banned? (just kidding) Sounds like not a very good fit, for you? If you had a seventeen, there is the dark side.

Good hunting. LB

The campfire is said to be the biggest hunting website on the net, also said to be the best run. It is owned and run by Rick Bin. I've been a member there since 2004. Don't give up on it, its worth it.

"Listen chuckle head"?

Dan - Yeah I did start to really go off on the guy, but he's simply out of control and it was stupid of me to engage. I understood his point though, with careful expert honing most any trigger can be made better. I didn't write it well, but I should have mentioned that I backed into the Moyer trigger and speed hammer. The trigger on my Rugers weren't all that bad to begin with, but I wanted something more consistent. So, I got the Moyer trigger for it's adjustability. I wasn't impressed. Then I got a speed hammer and spring kit. I knew things were different immediately. The trigger needed extensive adjustment to properly engage the hammer sear and the trigger return spring needed attention, but once that was done the difference in the trigger was significant. While I can’t measure it, the lock time seems to be far faster and the trigger is far more consistent. So, in combination I suggest the Moyer trigger and a speed hammer ….. but I didn’t write that and it was stupid of me. But, it wouldn’t have made a difference to that guy, he’s looking for a fight, insulting everybody that doesn’t completely agree with him.

Until this little experience I actually enjoyed the site and won't give up on it. I was wondering if the site was reasonably moderated or if it was simply a free for all. Both can be dealt with, but differently.

You need a hug, big fella!

Leonard - Easy there big guy, [Wink] I freely admit when I've made a mistake, this wasn't intended to be a whining secession. It’s just gathering information from those more knowledgeable about that website. They are what they are, I’m gathering information on the best way to navigate the site is all I’m looking for.

Telling him to "Listen chuckle head"?, probably wasn't a good idea, but there's sometinh about the term "chuckle head" that makes me smile.

For the massive amount of people on 24hr it seems to be very well run in my opinion. But like anywhere, there are a few idiots in the mix.

In the years I've hung around 24hr, R. Bin uses a very hands off approach dealing with controversial threads and people. This method seems to work well. He doesn't use crews of moderators to slap hands or muddy the waters with their interpretation of proper board behavior or goofy TOS stipulations. People can duke it out or walk away. Letting a thread end naturally seems to offer a better conclusion than cutting it off and deleting it.

Bin also ***** gear through the site like Leupold optics and McMillan stocks. 24 hr offers real savings on certain products. Not just sponser banners that no one looks at. I know I've spent a fair amount of money on gear sold there and the classifieds is a great place to pick up a deal from members.

From what I've seen on 24, is people can freely express bithes and gripes with sponsers products without Bin stepping in and deleting posts or threads. I've never seen a thread or post flushed. From what I can tell, only a small hanful of people have been shown the door, but only for really overt stuff.

Even though the predator forum is a very small part of 24 hr, it will often have as many or more viewers than the the Predator Hunting forum at PM.

Lony - Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. I generally really like the site and will keep going there.

I'm trying to remember something about Ric Bin and Len @ Long Range Hunting a few years ago? Big dispute, but don't remember what it was about?

Good hunting. LB

Over the past couple of months, I have bought three Nikon scopes at 24 hour campfire. I had zero problems, and the scopes were exactly as advertised. You can find bad apples on ANY site of course, but I have had good luck so far.

I like 24hr, they have an amazing number of folk who search the classifides. You can buy or sell most anything hunting related there.

They also have an ignore feature if someone is giving you a hard time.

I go by Bricktop over there [Wink]

Okay, now I've got to ask, Are your serious? If not I like the joke, if you are serious, well, that little conversation didn't go so well now did it.......

I'm getting the feeling that you folks have a need to defend the site, no real need. This thread isn't about bashing them or their policies, I just wanted to tap into your experiences as to how the site was run. The fellow I bumped up against obviously has a beef with at least one other poster in that thread that ran for a few pages. My mistake was to read the thread and accidentally skip a couple pages to make an out of place answer. In those skipped pages the fire burned hot and I didn't see it until I was in the middle of it.

Edited for spelling only

I've never tried the "ignore" feature at the campfire for bothersome people. I usually stay clear of the Hunter Campfire Forum where the majority of crap takes places, but it can and does happen in any forum.

Just so you know Tom, I go by the handle of Lee24 @ the Fire and have heard that possibly a few members have me on ignore? [Wink]

Bricktop huh? Never would have guessed that one [Smile]

Just couldn't resist, no I ain't bricktop but when I read this thread, 3 people came to mind. Ringworm, Lee24 and Bricktop. He is just that away and is on ignore by quite a few.

Not defending the site, you did afterall ask about the place... It runs pretty smooth with a few kinks here and there. I only know of one guy who was banned there and that would be Big Stick, he knows his stuff but gets a kick out of getting banned I guess. But he's hilarious.

Lonny, I knew it was you all the time. [Big Grin]

Not trying to defend the 24hr either, but it does amaze me how relatively smooth things run in contrast with a place like PM that has few members in comparison, but is plagued with controversy and problems.

I only know of two or possibly three people banned in the past four years. One banned member, Big Stick, was quite popular and a 30 plus page thread followed his banning, but Ric took the heat and let it run.
