How many of our dinosaur members are on facebook? Are we behind the trend? Is it cool? Do we need it? Apparently, my whole family is on facebook, except for me? Do I need it? I don't even twitter and I use an ancient flip phone, not even 3G much less the latest stuff out there. This is stuff I never needed before? I know females, particularly, that can't back out of a parking space without talking on the phone.

I got on Facebook a while back out curiosity and just to look around. Before I knew it I had 331 strangers wanting to be my friend.

I canceled my membership.

Tempting. I could certainly use 331 friends. Who wouldn't?

Come on, admit it. I know some of you are on facebook.

I'm on it. I migrated there from Myspace. I only have a few friends on it, though, and no one from where I work. A lot of people seem to 'collect' friends on there. I have all of 10 friends on there, and of those only 2 do I really interact with. I used to have more but had a problem with somebody I work with and deactivated an account and opened a new one, making sure nobody from work was on the new one. But then, I am hardly a social butterfly, and prolly interact on a few bulletin boards more than I do on Facebook.

I joined it for Rhino Calls and somehow ended up with 2 accounts. Damn thing is confusing at times but some of it is entertaining somewhat.

I have posted a couple photos on there that I have taken flack for but hey! They aready hated me anyway. Liberal fuktard animal loving hunters.

I have read on there amazed at some of the stuff people divulge about themselves.

Keep the bare minimum on the personal stuff and you'll be OK (or so I'm told.)

I'll "friend" you LB. Take the plung. Try something daring. Talk about your hummingbirds and you'll have 1,000 friends before you know it and then start talking about shooting coyotes and cats, sit back and watch the fun.

Fuck Facebook. I want to remain anonymos. I signed up to say hi to one person and everyone I never wanted to see again in my life was friending me.
Thanks but no thanks.

I remain a dinosaur; Im neither on facebook, nor do I even have a cell phone, home phone has worked wonderfully for the last 45 years Ive needed communication. I know all the people I need to know.

If somebody wants to 'friend' you, they will ask to be friends with you. You can then choose yea or nay. I usually ignore or deny requests from people I don't know or recognize. And you can set most settings so that only friends can see what you post. And I agree ref the personal info divulged...keep it sparse.

Vic, are you sure you don't have a cell phone? Dorothee told me you do; or DID?

Do you still have the same phone number as in MacNeal? Email me your current, if not, K?

Yep, I am on there. I started several years ago. I joined so I could corrispond with my kids in Tx. My kids would post pics of their school functions, and we could chat. It was a good deal.
That grew into a finding people I had forgot about. Pretty fun actually. The excitement wears off though,.....getting very commercial. Its alot like these bbs, alot are on there reinventing themselves, but hell, thats the internet in a nutshell. Go for it Lb!!!!!

"You can then choose yea or nay"

as well as "ignore" right?

I don't think you can check anybody's facebook without first becoming a member, right? And, do people use screen names, or their legal given and surname?

Now that's funny Randy!!!! Sadly it holds lots of truth!

I'm on Facebook and so is much of my family. I have very mixed feelings. Read the fine print before you allow any of the services to load your info... you will be giving your lkife away to whomever wants to find out anything about you. Those picture things can tell more than any text ever will!!!

I still hang my head when I tell my friends, yes, I get on hunting forums...

Won't do the facebook thing or none of that. I didn't go to all the trouble of moving away and starting a new life just so I could be found by my ex-wife on the computer.

Besides it would be embarrasing to not have any friends.

Hey I'll confess. I have a facebook account. I joined about five years ago, but I never used the account. One day I got this request from my sister that said she requested that I join FB so we could stay in touch. I started filling out the info and said this is stupid because we can just keep on emailing each other like we always have. I never used the account until three or four months ago. My 40th high school reunion is coming up and someone started a group within FB. I've been trying to help contact old alums so I reactivated my account and use it regularly. I will say this: some people put the most stupid mundane stuff on there. Who cares what you are having for dinner or what movie you are going to see tonight. I'm sure I've ticked off some of the old alums with my center right ideology postings. There are a bunch of dumb ass obama supporters on there.

Yeah, I was talking to my grandson, who is stationed in Germany. He says he gets unlimited phone and TV for about $100 per month.

Anyway, he is the one that told me that my son has an account, and NASA emailed me earlier telling me that somebody with the same name, in Upland, is on facebook and I assured him that it wasn't me

So anyway, one of the things he (grandson) told me was that my daughter posts pics of stuff she makes for dinner. How mundane can we get? But he said that she says that she wants to write a cook book. What the world needs, another cook book!

Must admit, I have a FB page. Allows me to monitor my daughter's page on there and keeps me in touch with classmates from high school, relatives, etc.. I check it about once a week. My daughter figured out how to video chat using her netbook which, like Skype, is free and in real time. Just as good or better than cell phone and you get to see the other person in real life at the other end. Matt just got into Alaska and I hope to be able to chat with him and his wife via FB or Skype to stay in touch.

Today's technology is what you make of it - bad or good. Like everything, moderation is a good thing.

As far as bunny huggers, I have an old classmate from high school who is gay - yes, I have a gay friend. And some I suspect but who aren't fessin' up to it. Yet. Get over it. He's also Catholic, but I don't hold that against him either. Neither does my wife. LOL Anyway, I've known this guy since kindergarten and kill coyotes on his dad's farm where he was raised. I posted one picture last year of me with a dead coyote and he un-friended me because of my "lifestyle choice". Yeah, I explained the hypocrisy of that to him...

Big George, who doesn't like South Park?

That is satire at it's finest! They make fun of everything AND everyone. Nothing is 'sacred'. If you look past the silly cartoon aspect of the show, there is actually some warped form of wisdom hidden in the wisecracks. Comic genius, if you ask me! After all, if you can't laugh at yourself, who can ya laugh at???

Regardless, I'm not picking up on the irony between liking a satrical comedy cartoon and not joining fakebook. Could you explain that, pal?

And on a different note, you've stated on numerous occasions that you are "not a edjucated man" and we all know your spelling leaves something to be desired. Which leads me to ask:

did you spell my screen name wrong on purpose, or was it an accidental slip of your fingers?

thanks!

I am a simple guy Fred. no, I may not be educated in the way of forming a sentence or in the spelling of some words but that's only effected my life with my on line abilities, nothing more.

Yes it was a slip, sorry about that ,
One thing you should know by now is if I intended to say something it wouldn't be in the form of a play in words.

see I read things in a simple ways , when you wrote "FAKEBOOK" It look to me that you were trying to say that something was fake witch struck me odd because I don't see anything fake about the use of facebook.
unlike what I do see with so many so called predator hunters on theses sights.
so the irony i see in you reply is that your to cool for facebook but not for cartoons

and i think when you used the word satrical you realy ment satirical PAL [Wink]

I know some very bright people that are atrocious spellers. But, is there any reason, these days with the spell checkers available, if you care? I mean, REALLY CARE, like Dan does.

Knockem, that facial expression with the mad bomber hat; is it because your thong is too tight? BWAHAHAHA!

LB,
I am not afraid to say that sometimes the spell check don't help me . because I don't read much better then I spell. [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]
these flaw I have with reading and writing really do bother me,, but only to a point ,
I wouldn't be a nicer guy or a better man if my spelling or sentience structure was better and thats what i think counts.

ps
Since I been retired and since the teaching of people with my learning problems have advanced so far i often thought about using up all my free time and going back to school and learning what they were unable to teach me back then.
but it gets in the way of hunting and hunting I have found to be the best way in using up my free time [Smile] [Smile]

c'mon George!! You need to give yourself more credit than that. Sometimes people take jabs about spelling and such like men will do but NOBODY on this site thinks less of you because you miss a word once in a while. I wish I was half the hunter that you are, I envy you.

If somebody other than George had misspelled that, I might wonder a bit, but I think it was an honest mistake on his part, Kind of a funny one, but just a simple mistake.

The thing about Facebook is you can make it as much or as little as you want. There are privacy controls to keep the riff raff off your page. Or, if you are gregarious or a herd bird, you can talk to the whole world. It is useful for family's to stay in touch, or groups of friends, and allows photo albums, which can be nice.

But I am careful about how much personal info I give out on it.

I have absolutely no problem with George or the way he types his posts, I see no harm in encouraging him and I've seen enough of him on the boards and heard enough about him to know that he's a hell of a hunter.

Where's the problem with that?

btw....TAs gone. [Smile] [Smile]

You are swimming upstream, Cal. That's the message I have been getting, as well. This is the Internet age. Smart phones, twitter, social networking, and blueRay, whatever that is?

I mean, really? Are you still on dial up? That's so damned exasperating, it's enough to get a man to log off forever.

Honestly, I'm in the same boat. I don't perceive a "need" for all this tech shit. Now, they tell me, email is dead, and yet I have about 680 unread emails. I just can't keep up. Some of these people are prolific sources, but really, I can't open everything I get, as it is.

The digital age is bewildering for fossils like me, but you have a fair chance to get up to speed, and get with the program. And, while you're at it, send Obama $5 for his reelection campaign, help the environment.

PS, ignore that last sentence, I wanted to see if you were paying attention.

A long time ago an old farmer once told me that the true measure of a man's wealth & freedom isn't the stuff that he has, but rather the stuff that he can do without. That statement makes more sense to me now than it did when I was a teen-ager. I see people everyday that are totally dependant on the latest electro-gizmo. Basic skills & common sense are falling by the wayside.

Took the wife to the city today, doc was sure she needed more stints. Long story short, she didn't and we stopped by Red Lobster in Norman on the way home since we had just saved $100,000. and it is lobsterfest!

Anyway, Norman of course is home to OU and there was probably 20 college kids in there, some with there parents, one table full of guys another table with 3 girls all around my table.

Every one of them had a cell phone and was texting, tweeting or whatever you do instead of talking. None of them were engaged in a conversation with their company at their table.

And then I look at Dave's awesome pics and think well just how far have we come? We're still drawing pics of our lives, only now it's on facebook instead of a rock wall...
