I need a dependable pickup light. Last week we wasted a lot of prime time trying to find two coyotes with an LED head lamp and a mini-Mag after the big flashlight failed. Both companies make a decent looking rechargeable flashlight for about a hundred bucks.

I've used an older rechargeable Maglite to good effect but wonder if anyone else is in love with their Ultra-Stinger and why. A little brighter, but half of the run-time of the Mag.

Nahuatl,
I have two streamlight rechargeables, the ultra stinger and the poly stinger. The smaller, cheaper stinger is bright enough for searching for animals, fumbling through the tool box, etc. The ultra stinger is even bright enough to scan with while not behind the spotlight (for short periods).

I have two recharger bases mounted in my truck. It takes some time to recharge them completely with the regular base; not sure exactly how long that is? But sticking them back on the charger has done the trick for me and how I use them. After reading a bit about them, I'll soon be getting "fast chargers" for mine. There are lots of other options. The piggy back recharge system looks interesting? I also noticed they finally started selling colored lenses (although you can easily make your own as you know). Take a look at Streamlight's website if you haven't already.

BTW...You'll find a huge price difference in the ultra stingers if you're searching on the internet. I don't think you'll find a better price than here http://www.bcsstore.com/flandsy.html Good luck!

Thanks for the reply, Joel. The number of Streamlite options is baffling. It appears none of the "Stinger" options are compatable with the "Ultra-Stinger." I wonder if the head size is the same and if even the flip up lenses for the Stinger fit the Ultra.

A friend of mine leaves his Maglite charging all the time in the back of his pickup. I wonder if the quick charger draws a lot more more than the steady charger, and if it will kill the pickup battery if the charger gets left on. I decided to put almost all the lights, outlets, and callers in the camper shell on a couple of main switches, so I can shut everything off at the end of the day. But it would be nice to know that the emergency flashlight is charged regardless.

I copied this from the Streamlight site.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Stinger fast 2.5 hour Piggyback charger holder. Includes an extra battery for your stinger flashlight and will charge a flashlight and extra battery at the same time. Piggyback charger is sold without charger cords. Ac 120v & dc 12v cords sold seperately.
The Stinger PiggyBack Charger works with Stinger, Stinger HP, Stinger XT Stinger XT HP, as well as PolyStinger.
Note that this item is not compatible with the Streamlight Ultra-Stinger.
Sometimes the man gives you too many choices. I'll have to call Streamlite to get the answers, and inevitably buy a Maglite and a Streamlite to do a decent comparison myself.
Quick chargers should be used sparingly. They aren't for every time use, or to be left on the light all of the time. If used too often, they will shorten battery life. If you are planning on leaving the light plugged in until ready to use, try a trickle charger to keep the light at peak power.
Some types of batteries can also develop a "Memory" and if only used for short periods between charges, they may not last for a long period when you need them too. These need to be "Stretched" from time to time, turn them on and let them run until the battery is low before putting them back on the charger.
